Around the world, black handprints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.

In a dark and dusty shop, a devil's supply of human teeth grown dangerously low.

And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherworldly war.

Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real; she's prone to disappearing on mysterious "errands"; she speaks many languages—not all of them human; and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she's about to find out.

When one of the strangers—beautiful, haunted Akiva—fixes his fire-colored eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself? (Goodreads)
Daughter of Smoke and Bone was a very unique read for me. I can honestly say that it’s like no other book I’ve read thus far. This book is just… Wow!

The main character in the story, Karou, is awesome. Actually she’s above and beyond awesome. She’s the really strong, kick butt girl that I always love as the heroine. Her very unique childhood, and the people she was raised by, made her such an interesting person. You have to love her. The male lead in the story is Akiva. He really had me guessing in the beginning of the book. I found their relationship to be really interesting, and these two characters definitely made the book more fascinating.

The secondary characters were very interesting as well. I loved Karou’s best friend, Zuzana. I loved her, not only for her sarcasm, but for her friendship with Karou. I love friends like these. Karou’s family was really, really interesting to read about. Brimstone, her adoptive dad so to speak, was really a mystery to me. I’m hoping we find out even more about him in the next books.

For the most part, the book was very well paced. There were only a few slow spots. There were also a few parts that were a little confusing, as there were just a lot of things going on at one time. Otherwise, the book was well written, and the plot was very unique. The ending definitely leaves you hanging. I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen in the next book.

Overall, I found Daughter of Smoke and Bone to be a really enjoyable, unique read. I hope you all enjoy it as well!

Happy Reading!

  15. I live near to Czech Republic so it was very interesting (and funny) to read something from this locality. But this book was...a bit qick for me. *spoilers* I mean...Akiva, tough and determined guy, all of a sudden becomes crying emotional wreck and Karou is like "once there is a sexy guy, life goes sideways". It is like a typical YA Paranormal illness. Anyway, I can say that I enjoyed this book and like it :)
