Hey there!
October was a pretty good reading month for me!!
I ended up taking a much needed break from a lot of things in October
so that I could focus on my TBR and blog,
and I it was just what I needed.

I added a lot of new books to my shelf in October,
and read 11 awesome books, which is pretty awesome.
I also managed to put a small dent in my reading challenge as well!
:)

Here's hoping for another great month in November!!

What books did you add to your collection this month?
How many books did you read??

Seventeen-year-old Audrey Rose Wadsworth was born a lord's daughter, with a life of wealth and privilege stretched out before her. But between the social teas and silk dress fittings, she leads a forbidden secret life.

Against her stern father's wishes and society's expectations, Audrey often slips away to her uncle's laboratory to study the gruesome practice of forensic medicine. When her work on a string of savagely killed corpses drags Audrey into the investigation of a serial murderer, her search for answers brings her close to her own sheltered world.
(Goodreads)

My Thoughts...

I didn't know if I was going to be able to fit Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco into my Halloween Reads Week, but thankfully I was able to, and I'm so glad to finally read the book! This book had the perfect amount of creepy, just what I look for in my Halloween Reads!

The main character in the story, Audrey Rose Wadsworth, is really awesome. She was born into a life of money and privilege, but she'd give it all up in a second to practice forensic medicine, which she just happens to be awesome at. I can't imagine being a woman during this time period, because I would totally rage at all the men for thinking that women are weak and can't handle all the things that Audrey totally handled.

I was completely fascinated by the time period and setting for the story. I love books during this period. The author did a really great job with the descriptions in the book. I could picture everything perfectly in my mind,  even some of the forensic things that had me squirming just a bit. Ha! But, Audrey Rose was awesome, and handled it like the professional that she wants so badly to be. I always envy people that can do this, as I certainly cannot.

Overall; Stalking Jack the Ripper was a great addition to my Halloween Reads week! I really can't wait for the sequels to see what Miss Audrey Rose is up to next!

I've found very little about private detective R. F. Jackaby to be standard in the time I've known him. Working as his assistant tends to call for a somewhat flexible relationship with reality . . .

In 1892, New Fiddleham, New England, things are never quite what they seem, especially when Abigail Rook and her eccentric employer, R. F. Jackaby, are called upon to investigate the supernatural. First, members of a particularly vicious species of shape-shifters disguise themselves as a litter of kittens. A day later, their owner is found murdered, with a single mysterious puncture wound to her neck. Then, in nearby Gad's Valley, dinosaur bones from a recent dig go missing, and an unidentifiable beast attacks animals and people, leaving their mangled bodies behind. Policeman Charlie Cane, exiled from New Fiddleham to the valley, calls on Abigail for help, and soon Abigail and Jackaby are on the hunt for a thief, a monster, and a murderer. (Goodreads)

My Thoughts...

I hadn't actually planned on starting Beastly Bones so soon after finishing Jackaby, as my TBR is pretty full at the moment, but once I discovered that my library had the audiobook for it, I couldn't wait to dive back into the story with these characters that I've come to love so much!

I said it before in my review for Jackaby, but I'm going to say it again here. Abigail Rook is awesome. She's definitely my most favorite character in this book. I love her determination and persistence. And I really adore Jackaby as well. I love how wonderfully peculiar he is, and, he makes me laugh so much. I'm always looking forward to what he's going to get into next. While we are introduced to some interesting new characters in the story, all of my favorite secondary characters are along for the ride in this sequel as well, including Charlie, who is so super sweet. We didn't get to see much of Jenny and Douglas this time around, but I'm hoping we will see more of them in the next book.

I love that the storyline for this book was completely engrossing as well as entertaining. It definitely held my attention. I love the mystery and historical parts of the story just as much as I love the supernatural parts. It really makes for a great read. This story was a little different than the last book, but I still enjoyed it nonetheless.

Overall; Beastly Bones was an excellent follow up to Jackaby! I really enjoyed this book so much. Now that I've finished the first two books in the series so quickly, I can't wait to get started on book 3, Ghostly Echoes, which I'm hoping to start as soon as possible. And I'll be anxiously awaiting book 4's release in 2017!

The monster showed up after midnight. As they do.

But it isn’t the monster Conor’s been expecting. He’s been expecting the one from his nightmare, the one he’s had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments, the one with the darkness and the wind and the screaming…

This monster is something different, though. Something ancient, something wild. And it wants the most dangerous thing of all from Conor.

It wants the truth. (Goodreads)

My Thoughts...

A Monster Calls is the very first book I've read by Patrick Ness, although I have quite a few of his books on my TBR at the moment. I decided to include the book in my Halloween Reads week, because the cover for the book looks amazingly creepy, and also because I recently watched the movie trailer, and I was super curious about the story. I am SO glad that I decided to read this book. I loved it, and I just know that it's one of those books that I will remember always.

It was SO easy for me to relate to the main character in the story, Conor. I've been in his shoes more times than I care to remember, although not with a parent, but with other family members that have been more like parents to me. Conor was really a great kid, and I felt bad for him for what he was going through. The Monster in the story is not at all what I expected, but I absolutely loved him as well.

I didn't really read much about the book before I started it, so the storyline was completely different that what I thought it would be. I loved it regardless, and I was completely engrossed in the story.  It's definitely one that so many people will be able to relate to in some form or another, and the story will stick with you long after you've closed the last page. Coming in at just 216 pages, some of which included beautiful illustrations, this book was a really quick read. I flew through it faster than I anticipated, and I was really sad when the book came to an end. But, I loved the story, and I can't wait to see how the movie compares.

I didn't find out until after I had read the book that the audiobook is narrated by Jason Issacs! I wish I had known this sooner, as I really love the sound of his voice, and I'll definitely be checking out that audiobook as soon as possible.

Overall; I don't feel like I've done a very good job of expressing how much I loved A Monster Calls, but I'm hoping you get the point. I really, really enjoyed everything, from the characters to the storyline, and I'm definitely excited to read more by Patrick Ness as soon as possible. If you decide to check out A Monster Calls, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

A mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. A strange collection of curious photographs.

A horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive.

A spine-tingling fantasy illustrated with haunting vintage photography, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children will delight adults, teens, and anyone who relishes an adventure in the shadows. (Goodreads)

My Thoughts...

I've had Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs sitting on my bookshelf for an embarrassingly long time, (Seriously, embarrassing!), and I'm seriously kicking myself for not reading it sooner! With the movie release, and Halloween coming up, I knew this would be the perfect time to start the book, and I'm SO glad I did!

I enjoyed reading the story from Jacob, the main character's, point of view. The poor kid had no idea what was happening to him in the beginning story, but he took it all in stride. There were SO many interesting characters in the story, and most of which I absolutely loved. (Except for the bad guys, don't expect me to love them. *wink*) My most favorite character was probably Olive, the girl on the front cover of the book, who can levitate. She seemed like she'd be SO much fun! I totally want to be her.

When I first got this book, I really wanted to read it, because I was curious. But, it looked really creepy, and I don't always do well with the creepy stuff. Then I became even more curious when the movie trailers started coming out, and it didn't look so terribly creepy after all. I ended up putting this book in my Halloween TBR, because, creepy is perfect for Halloween time. Now that I've read the book, it wasn't that creepy at all. Just the perfect amount, actually, and I'm kicking myself for not having read the book sooner. The storyline was very engrossing, and the story pulled me in right away. There were quite a few twists and turns as the story went along, some that definitely kept me guessing as to where the story was going. The ending left me wanting more, and I can't wait to pick up Hollow City soon!

Overall, I really enjoyed Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children so much more than I expected to, and I'm super curious to see the movie now, AND continue the rest of the series as well!!

“Miss Rook, I am not an occultist,” Jackaby said. “I have a gift that allows me to see truth where others see the illusion--and there are many illusions. All the world’s a stage, as they say, and I seem to have the only seat in the house with a view behind the curtain.”

Newly arrived in New Fiddleham, New England, 1892, and in need of a job, Abigail Rook meets R. F. Jackaby, an investigator of the unexplained with a keen eye for the extraordinary--including the ability to see supernatural beings. Abigail has a gift for noticing ordinary but important details, which makes her perfect for the position of Jackaby’s assistant. On her first day, Abigail finds herself in the midst of a thrilling case: A serial killer is on the loose. The police are convinced it’s an ordinary villain, but Jackaby is certain it’s a nonhuman creature, whose existence the police--with the exception of a handsome young detective named Charlie Cane--deny.

Doctor Who meets Sherlock in William Ritter’s debut novel, which features a detective of the paranormal as seen through the eyes of his adventurous and intelligent assistant in a tale brimming with cheeky humor and a dose of the macabre. (Goodreads)

My Thoughts...

I've had Jackaby by William Ritter on my TBR for a while now, and I'm really not sure why I waited so long to read it! It sounded like the perfect book to have on my Halloween TBR, and I happened to find the audiobook on the library website, so I figured I'd give it a go. So glad I did! I loved this book!!

There are SO many characters in the story that I ended up absolutely loving! The main character, Miss Abigail Rook, wants nothing more than to have adventure in her life, so she sets out to do just that. I envy her for the determination that she has. Such a smart young lady! Also, there's Jackaby himself. Ha! This man, he's so peculiar, and made me laugh so many times. Abigail and Jackaby make a great pair, and I'm looking forward to seeing what adventures they go on next.

There are also a lot of great secondary characters in the story as well, including Jenny, Charlie, Douglas and even Marlowe. I'm also SUPER curious to see if we ever learn the story about the frog.

For some reason I went into this book thinking it had something to do with Jack the Ripper, (I'm not sure where I got that from.), but it totally didn't. I love the storyline though. It was a mystery and fantasy all mashed into one book that kept me hooked as I listened to the story. And, it's a pretty quick read as well. I listened to the book in audiobook format, and I have to say that the narrator, Nicola Barber, did a wonderful job with telling the story! I loved her voice, and the voices she made for all the characters.

Overall; Jackaby won me over, and I can't to read the next book in the series, Beastly Bones, which I currently have from the library and plan to start soon, and then Ghostly Echos after that. I'm also thrilled to discover that there's going to be a fourth book as well!

In this irresistible story, Kasie West explores the timeless question of what to do when you fall for the person you least expect. Witty and romantic, this paperback original from a fan favorite is perfect for fans of Stephanie Perkins and Morgan Matson.

When Autumn Collins finds herself accidentally locked in the library for an entire weekend, she doesn’t think things could get any worse. But that’s before she realizes that Dax Miller is locked in with her. Autumn doesn’t know much about Dax except that he’s trouble. Between the rumors about the fight he was in (and that brief stint in juvie that followed it) and his reputation as a loner, he’s not exactly the ideal person to be stuck with. Still, she just keeps reminding herself that it is only a matter of time before Jeff, her almost-boyfriend, realizes he left her in the library and comes to rescue her.

Only he doesn’t come. No one does.

Instead it becomes clear that Autumn is going to have to spend the next couple of days living off vending-machine food and making conversation with a boy who clearly wants nothing to do with her. Except there is more to Dax than meets the eye. As he and Autumn first grudgingly, and then not so grudgingly, open up to each other, Autumn is struck by their surprising connection. But can their feelings for each other survive once the weekend is over and Autumn’s old life, and old love interest, threaten to pull her from Dax’s side? (Goodreads)

I just recently finished listening to TWO of Kasie's audiobooks,
(reviews for both on the blog!)
and now I am even more excited to read By Your Side!!

If you don't already know, I'm a HUGE fan of contemporary novels,
and all of the books I've read by Kasie so far have been great.
I can't wait to read By Your Side,
as well as Lucky in Love, which comes out next summer!!

Only, who is he? As Lily attempts to unravel the mystery and juggle school, friends, crushes, and her crazy family, she discovers that matters of the heart can’t always be spelled out… (Goodreads)

My Thoughts...

When I first discovered P.S. I Like You by Kasie West, I knew it would be a book that I wanted to read. All the books I've read by West so far have been great, and I knew this one would not disappoint as well. And, it didn't! P.S. I Like You is probably my most favorite read by West so far!

The main character in the story, Lily, is adorable. I love her love for music, and could definitely relate to her through that. Actually, I could actually relate to her in so many ways. She was great. I love her family as well. They are huge and wild and totally loving. She has the type of family that I LOVE to read about in stories. I guess because it reminds me so much of my little family.

I adore the storyline for the book. I had read a review before I started the story that said it reminded the reader of the movie You've Got Mail, which just so happens to be my most favorite movie ever, so I couldn't wait to read the book to see this for myself. And it did totally remind me of the movie! An anonymous penpal, who is easy to talk to, easy to relate to, and trying to figure out who it is. Ah, I totally fell in love with this story.

P.S. I Like You is the second audiobook that I've listened to by Kasie West in the past week, so yeah, you can totally say I'm hooked. I really enjoyed the narrator for the book, Shannon McManus, who also narrated The Fill-In Boyfriend. She did a great job with the different voices, and held my attention throughout the story. Excellent job!

Overall; I can't seem to say enough about how much I loved this book. SO good, and I'm definitely going to have to get a print version to add to my shelf soon. If you're a fan of fun contemporaries, definitely check out P.S. I Like You, and ALL the books by Kasie West!

Sepora's gift could save Tarik's kingdom from the Quiet Plague. But should she trust her growing feelings for her nemesis, or should she hide her gifts at all costs?
(Goodreads)

My Thoughts...

I am a huge fan of Anna Banks, so I was SUPER excited to read her newest release, Nemesis! When I first saw the stunning cover for this book, I knew I'd have to have it in my collection, and once I read the summary, I couldn't wait to get started on the book. It definitely did not disappoint!

Nemesis is told in alternating chapters between Princess Sepora and King Tarik. I LOVED this, as I always feel you get so much more information this way, and I love seeing two sides to the story. I found both Sepora and Tarik to be completely fascinating characters, and I enjoyed watching the relationship grow between the two as the story went along. They were both really awesome, well written characters, and there are a lot of really interesting secondary characters in the story as well!

The really enjoyed the storyline for the book as well. I don't read fantasy books often enough, and this one was really fascinating. To be honest with you, it took me a little while to get into a groove when I first started reading this book. There were a lot of unique names of people and things in the story, and I was constantly stopping myself try to make sure I was reading and pronouncing the words right. But once I got used to them, it wasn't a problem anymore, and I was able to become completely engrossed in the story. The ending of the book leaves me dying to get my hands on the sequel, and it's going to be a long wait until the next book is released. Sigh.

I knew this book was going to be a series, but I just recently found out that it's a duology, and not a trilogy. That's interesting, and I can't wait to add the second book to my collection!

Overall; I really enjoyed reading Nemesis! The great characters and unique storyline came together to form quite a fantastic read. I'll be anxiously awaiting the sequel when it's released in 2017!

As bubbly as champagne and delectable as wedding cake, Once and for All, Sarah Dessen's thirteenth novel, is set in the world of wedding planning, where crises are routine.

Louna, daughter of famed wedding planner Natalie Barrett, has seen every sort of wedding: on the beach, at historic mansions, in fancy hotels and clubs. Perhaps that's why she's cynical about happily-ever-after endings, especially since her own first love ended tragically. When Louna meets charming, happy-go-lucky serial dater Ambrose, she holds him at arm's length. But Ambrose isn't about to be discouraged, now that he's met the one girl he really wants.

Sarah Dessen's many, many fans will adore her latest, a richly satisfying, enormously entertaining story that has everything humor, romance, and an ending both happy and imperfect, just like life itself." (Goodreads)

This book sounds great, as all of her books do.
I can't wait to add it to my collection!!

Top Ten Tuesday: All About Books Recommended to Me

October 11:  All About Books Recommended to Me
(From fellow friends, bloggers, reviews etc.)

My TBR schedule is usually made up of review books,
and I rarely seem to have time to read other books.
Here's a list of books I've read due to recommendations,
or because of reviews I've read or things I've heard about the book!

1. The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson - This book was recommended to me by a really awesome publicist, and I loved it so much!! Just the beginning to one of my most favorite series ever. :)

2. City of Bones by Cassandra Clare - This book was recommended to me by a friend waaaaaay back when. It was one of the first books I read that got me into reading YA books, and I'm SO glad I read it!

3. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling - Unfortunately, I didn't read these books when they first came out. (I SOOOOO wish I would have.) And I honestly never really thought about them until I entered the book blogging world. When I discovered everyone's love for the books, I knew I just HAD to read them. I'm still working on reading/finishing the series, but I love all that I've read so far!

4. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins - Another series that I picked up right when I started blogging because of recommendations by others. Mockingjay was just fixing to release when I discovered this series, and I read so many reviews that this was a series I MUST READ.So glad I did. Awesome series.

5. Me Before You by Jojo Moyes - When it was my turn to pick a book for my book club read one month, my dear friend Kathy suggested I pick Me Before You. I had seen a lot about the book, but hadn't read it yet, and I'm SO glad she suggested it to me. It's definitely a fave of mine.

6. The Martian by Andy Weir - I really wasn't sure about this book, it's not really the kind I read, but I was at first interested because of the movie, then I started seeing all the things that people were saying about it, and I HAD to read it. I really enjoyed the book, and it kind of drives me crazy that I still don't have a copy of my own!

7. The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins - I read this book late last year, right when the details of the movie started coming out, and everyone was talking about it online. I still need to see the movie, and I'm hoping that I can get to that this week!

8. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn - Another book recommended to me by my lovely friend Kathy! I read the book before the movie came out, and I wasn't sure what to expect when I started it, but oh my, what a wild ride!

9. Since You've Been Gone by Morgan Matson - Yes, another Kathy recommendation! I had never read a Morgan Matson book before, then Kathy sent me a review copy of this book, and I FELL IN LOVE. Now Morgan is one of my most favorite authors. I love her books!

10. The Fault in our Stars by John Green - This book was recommended to me by fellow bookworm Petra, who also sent me a copy of the book to read as well! I hadn't heard of John Green before that time, but this book definitely made me a fan!

Those are just a few of my favorite books that have been recommended to me in the past. I have SO many more I still need to read. SOON!
