This is not the time for the fight to end. Now is when the fight will begin. This is the time to regain what has been lost.Alera

Queen of a fallen kingdom, secretly in love with the enemy.

Shaselle

Daughter of a murdered father, rebel with a cause.

One lives behind the former Hytanican palace walls and walks the razor's edge to keep the fragile peace in her beloved homeland. The other slips through the war-torn streets, seeking retribution for her family's tragedy, following whispers of insurgency.

Both face choices that will separate them from those they cannot help but love. As their stories intertwine, a conspiracy ignites that may end in slavery or death—or lead to freedom anew, if only each can face what must be sacrificed. (Goodreads)
I have really enjoyed reading the Legacy series over the past year and a half. Sacrifice was a brilliant ending to the series that I really enjoyed, much more than I expected to.

Sacrifice picks up right where Allegiance leaves off. Alera is now the Grand Provost, under the command of the Cokyrians. Stress levels are high, and a rebellion is imminent. Alera, with the help of the Narian, must keep the peace between the Hytanicans and the Cokyrians, in order to keep her people safe. But what can she do when her people take matters into their own hands?

Alera is a character that I have always loved. Over the series, we have watched her become a very strong woman. I could think of no better character to be the Queen of Hytanica. I love the relationship between Alera and Narian. They are perfect for each other. The way that Narian cares for Alera is so sweet. They make a perfect pair together.

In the book, we also get to see a secondary viewpoint from Shaselle, whose father was murdered by the Cokyrians in the previous book.  I thought it was interesting getting to see a viewpoint from a character other than Alera. Shaselle is another strong young lady. While she didn’t always make decisions that I agreed with, I loved that she was so stubborn and headstrong.  If Kluver wanted to write a spin-off series about Shaselle, I would definitely read it!

We also get to see a bit of our favorite characters from the previous books.  London has got to be my favorite character in the series. He is so dark and mysterious, I never know what to expect from him. I can’t get enough! Steldor is another character that grew on me the more I read of this series. I will admit that I didn’t care for him too much in the beginning of the series, but he has worked his way into my heart the more I get to know about him. There are so many wonderful characters in this series, I could go on and on about them.

When I got towards the end of the book, I was starting to expect an anticlimactic ending. I should know better. The author managed to leave me speechless, hand over my mouth, with tears in my eyes at one particular part. (Don’t worry, I will not ruin that moment for you.) That is another thing I love about this series. Just when you think everything will go the way you want it, the author will throw you a curveball. I love the unexpected. (Well, most times!)

Overall, I have really enjoyed reading this series, so much more than I expected to. Cayla Kluver is an insanely talented author, and I’m really looking forward to reading more of her work in the future.

Happy Reading!

  1. Curveballs, FTW! I love when you're thinking one thing and the author totally throws you for a (good) loop, especially one that garners such an emotional reaction. I haven't read this series but I think I'll have to check it out!

  2. Long time no see, Christy! Glad to be coming back to this brilliant review. I loved this series and can't wait to read my ARC of this! I'm so looking forward to the action and seeing how all this ends. It sounds intense and so insanely good. *bounces* I'm also excited to read about Shaselle. She sounds like someone I'd like so I'd probably be up for a spin-off with her too ;) Steldor. Oh boy. I too went from hate to love. Unexpected, eh? Must shut up now otherwise I'll go on endlessly about this series too <3
