Review: Crewel by Jennifer Albin

Crewel
(Crewel World #1)
by Gennifer Albin

Publication Date: October 16th, 2012
Publisher: MacMillan
Pages: 368
ISBN: 9780374316419

B&N | Amazon | The Book Depository | Goodreads

Incapable. Awkward. Artless.

That’s what the other girls whisper behind her back. But sixteen year-old Adelice Lewys has a secret: she wants to fail.

Gifted with the ability to weave time with matter, she’s exactly what the Guild is looking for, and in the world of Arras, being chosen as a Spinster is everything a girl could want. It means privilege, eternal beauty, and being something other than a secretary. It also means the power to embroider the very fabric of life. But if controlling what people eat, where they live and how many children they have is the price of having it all, Adelice isn’t interested.

Not that her feelings matter, because she slipped and wove a moment at testing, and they’re coming for her—tonight.

Now she has one hour to eat her mom’s overcooked pot roast. One hour to listen to her sister’s academy gossip and laugh at her Dad’s stupid jokes. One hour to pretend everything’s okay. And one hour to escape.

Because once you become a Spinster, there’s no turning back. (Goodreads)
I really didn’t know what to expect when I started reading Crewel. I had heard really good things about the book, but I just didn’t think I would like it based on the summary.  I must say, Crewel was, by far, one of the best books I have read so far in 2012. Let me try to explain to you why I think this, without giving too much away!

I found the characters in the story to be very interesting, and each for their own reasons. The main character, Adelice, was a very smart and gifted young lady, who was even at times a bit snarky. (I love snarky characters!)  The best thing about Adelice, is that she grows stronger and more mature throughout the novel.  With all of the horrible things that happen to her throughout the book, she manages to stay strong. I always find that admirable.

There are two love interests in the story, Erik and Josten. While I found each boy to be mysterious and engrossing, I was rooting for Josten the whole time. I really felt that I connected with him more than I did with Erik, and I wonder if it is because Josten is basically the underdog. (That and he treated Adelice very well.)

Of course, while there are characters in the novel that you will love, there are also some that you are really going to hate. You will hate them with a passion!  I will let you discover who those characters are on your own, but consider yourself warned!

I love the plot for the novel.  I found it to be quite unique and refreshing. The idea of women being spinsters and actually weaving threads of time, it was so very unique. The plot and the wonderful descriptions definitely kept me turning the page. The ending leaves you on a pretty big cliffhanger, and it is one that will leave you begging for the next book!

The only problem that I had with the books was with some of the characters names.  They were really different from the normal, which is not a bad thing at all! I just kept going back over them trying to figure out how exactly they were pronounced. But after a while, I got used to them.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book, so much more than I expected to! (I love it when that happens!)  I’m definitely going to order a finished copy to add to my collection. And I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book in the series.

Happy Reading!

There's nowhere left to hide.

I thought vampires were our enemies - they controlled our lives, isolated our cities, and demanded our blood - until I met Victor. With Victor taking over as the new Lord Valentine, things were supposed to get better. Instead, they're worse than ever.

Day Walkers, a new breed of vampires who can walk in the sun, are terrorizing the city. Blood supplies are low, and if Victor's vampires don't get enough, they will become infected with the Thirst - a disease that will turn them into mindless killers.

To stop it, I must journey across the desolate wasteland to the very place where the sickness began. I can only hope that the answers that await me are enough to save us all . . . before it's too late.  (Goodreads)

A few months ago I had the pleasure of reading Darkness Before Dawn, and I really enjoyed it so much more than I was expecting to. I'm so super excited for the second novel in this series to be released. Judging from the summary, it sounds just as good as the first book!
I can't wait!

Review: Pushing the Limits by Katie McGarry

Pushing the Limits
(Pushing the Limits #1)
by Katie McGarry

Publication Date: July 31st, 2012
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Pages: 384
ISBN: 9780373210497

B&N | Amazon | The Book Depository | Goodreads

No one knows what happened the night Echo Emerson went from popular girl with jock boyfriend to gossiped-about outsider with "freaky" scars on her arms. Even Echo can't remember the whole truth of that horrible night. All she knows is that she wants everything to go back to normal. But when Noah Hutchins, the smoking-hot, girl-using loner in the black leather jacket, explodes into her life with his tough attitude and surprising understanding, Echo's world shifts in ways she could never have imagined. They should have nothing in common. And with the secrets they both keep, being together is pretty much impossible.

Yet the crazy attraction between them refuses to go away. And Echo has to ask herself just how far they can push the limits and what she'll risk for the one guy who might teach her how to love again. (Goodreads)
I decided to read Pushing the Limits after reading a review that said it was comparable to another book that I had read recently and loved. I must say, I absolutely adored Pushing the Limits, so much more than I expected to. It is one of those books that will stay with you, and you will think about it long after you have finished reading it.

I found the two main characters in the story, Echo and Noah, to be completely relatable, not only to myself, but to each other as well. They both have had major events in their lives that have left them completely scared, literally, and that have changed their lives forever.  You would not think that they would be a good pair when they first meet. Echo is the good girl that always wants to please everyone, and Noah is the bad boy that is a longer and only cares about himself.  But once they are together, things start changing for the both of them, and we get to see different sides of them. They were SO good for each other; they help each other to face what the past has changed for them. I adore this couple; they have made a spot on my list of my top favorite couples.

When you read the events that have happened in Echo and Noah’s lives, it will completely break your heart. I’m not much of a crier, but this book brought me to tears quite a few times. These poor kids, they went through so much more than any teen should be expected to go through. The author did an excellent job in making me feel the characters emotions. It was right there on the page, and it helped me connect with the characters even more. I flew through this book in record time, the story kept me so engrossed, I just couldn’t get enough.

The secondary characters were all interesting in the way that they had demons of their own to deal with. Echo’s father and stepmother, at first, came off as characters that I really wanted to hate. But once the story unfolds and we find out why they are the way they are, you have to feel something for them.  Noah’s friends, Isaiah and Beth, were both interesting in their own way, and I see that we may be reading about Beth in the next novel in this series. (I can’t wait!)

Overall, I really enjoyed this book, SO VERY MUCH.  It has definitely earned a spot on my bookshelf, and I plan to reread it over and over again. (That is saying something, because I only reread books that I LOVE!)  If you haven’t checked out Pushing the Limits yet, I definitely recommend that you do!

Happy Reading!

Sybella arrives at the convent’s doorstep half mad with grief and despair. Those that serve Death are only too happy to offer her refuge—but at a price. Naturally skilled in both the arts of death and seduction, the convent views Sybella as one of their most dangerous weapons.

But those assassin’s skills are little comfort when the convent returns her to a life that nearly drove her mad. Her father’s rage and brutality are terrifying, and her brother’s love is equally monstrous. And while Sybella is a weapon of justice wrought by the god of Death himself, He must give her a reason to live. When she discovers an unexpected ally imprisoned in the dungeons, will a daughter of Death find something other than vengeance to live for?

This heart-pounding sequel to Grave Mercy serves betrayal, treachery, and danger in equal measure, bringing readers back to fifteenth century Brittany and will keep them on the edge of their seats. (Goodreads)

So, I haven't read Grave Mercy yet...
But I have heard nothing but awesome things about the book.
It would be so awesome to read Grave Mercy and Dark Triumph together!
Awesome!

What are you Waiting for this week???

Review: The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

The Raven Boys

by Maggie Stiefvater

Publisher: Scholastic Press
Pages: 408
ISBN: 9780545424929

“There are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on St. Mark’s Eve,” Neeve said. “Either you’re his true love . . . or you killed him.”

It is freezing in the churchyard, even before the dead arrive.

Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue herself never sees them—not until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks directly to her.

His name is Gansey, and Blue soon discovers that he is a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble.

But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He has it all—family money, good looks, devoted friends—but he’s looking for much more than that. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents all the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul who ranges from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher of the four, who notices many things but says very little.

For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.

From Maggie Stiefvater, the bestselling and acclaimed author of the Shiver trilogy and The Scorpio Races, comes a spellbinding new series where the inevitability of death and the nature of love lead us to a place we’ve never been before. (Goodreads)
Sixteen year old Blue Sargent has no psychic abilities whatsoever, unlike her mother, who can see the dead. That is until one night on St. Mark’s Eve, when Blue see’s the spirit of a young boy named Gansey; a boy from a nearby private school. Also known as a Raven Boy.  When Blue’s path meets with Gansey’s in real life, Blue manages to get caught up in a journey that will change her life forever.

Wow. The characters in the book are just awesome. Blue was a very strong heroine; I felt that she had a good head on her shoulders.  She knew that an event in her future could take the life of someone she loves in the future, and she took that information very seriously.  I was actually glad to see that she had restraint.  I also really liked her mom, Maura, and all of the other psychic ladies that lived with them. They made for some very interesting characters!

The Raven Boys were all so mysterious; even with all of the information we got on them, I wanted to know more. Gansey is definitely not what he seems. There is something about him that I can’t put my finger on just yet. And I love him for that.  Adam, bless his heart, was such a wonderful young man. You couldn’t help but love him for the situations that made his life so difficult.  I just wanted to give him a big hug!  Ronan was an excellent bad-boy.  I am dying to know the mystery behind his story. We are given bits of information, but I feel that we were left hanging a bit about him. (Hopefully answers will come in the next book.)  Noah had me completely fooled from the beginning! Finding out his story was definitely a page turner.  I love the relationship between these four boys. You don’t find one quite that strong very often. They definitely had each other’s backs.

The book is told from multiple viewpoints, and I found that to be quite interesting. I haven’t read many books that have that perspective, and I enjoyed seeing the different characters points of view. I do feel like I was left hanging with some parts of the books, but again, I am hoping we will get answers in the next book. The book definitely leaves you wanting to know more. What is going to happen with Blue and her Raven Boys? I’m dying to find out, that’s for sure.

Overall, I thought this was a great read! I really enjoyed reading Shiver and The Scorpio Races last year, and I am glad to be able to add The Raven Boys to my book shelf!

Happy Reading!
