A surprising, utterly romantic companion to My Life Next Door—great for fans of Sarah Dessen and Jenny Han

Tim Mason was The Boy Most Likely To find the liquor cabinet blindfolded, need a liver transplant, and drive his car into a house

Alice Garrett was The Girl Most Likely To . . . well, not date her little brother’s baggage-burdened best friend, for starters.

For Tim, it wouldn’t be smart to fall for Alice. For Alice, nothing could be scarier than falling for Tim. But Tim has never been known for making the smart choice, and Alice is starting to wonder if the “smart” choice is always the right one. When these two crash into each other, they crash hard.

Then the unexpected consequences of Tim’s wild days come back to shock him. He finds himself in a situation that isn’t all it appears to be, that he never could have predicted . . . but maybe should have.

And Alice is caught in the middle.

Told in Tim’s and Alice’s distinctive, disarming, entirely compelling voices, this novel is for readers of The Spectacular Now, Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, and Paper Towns.

Confession: I own two Huntley Fitzpatrick books already that I've not yet read.
I've heard they are great books, so I don't know what's stopping me,
other than my insane TBR pile. Haha!

This companion novel to My Life Next Door sounds pretty awesome,
and I can't wait to add it to my growing collection!!

Ira Levinson is in trouble. At ninety-one years old, in poor health and alone in the world, he finds himself stranded on an isolated embankment after a car crash. Suffering multiple injuries, he struggles to retain consciousness until a blurry image materializes and comes into focus beside him: his beloved wife Ruth, who passed away nine years ago. Urging him to hang on, she forces him to remain alert by recounting the stories of their lifetime together – how they met, the precious paintings they collected together, the dark days of WWII and its effect on them and their families. Ira knows that Ruth can’t possibly be in the car with him, but he clings to her words and his memories, reliving the sorrows and everyday joys that defined their marriage.

A few miles away, at a local rodeo, a Wake Forest College senior’s life is about to change. Recovering from a recent break-up, Sophia Danko meets a young cowboy named Luke, who bears little resemblance to the privileged frat boys she has encountered at school. Through Luke, Sophia is introduced to a world in which the stakes of survival and success, ruin and reward -- even life and death – loom large in everyday life. As she and Luke fall in love, Sophia finds herself imagining a future far removed from her plans -- a future that Luke has the power to rewrite . . . if the secret he’s keeping doesn’t destroy it first.

Ira and Ruth. Sophia and Luke. Two couples who have little in common, and who are separated by years and experience. Yet their lives will converge with unexpected poignancy, reminding us all that even the most difficult decisions can yield extraordinary journeys: beyond despair, beyond death, to the farthest reaches of the human heart.

I did not intend to write a review for this book, but one paragraph turned into five, and I had a full review on my hands. So I figured, why not post it???

I am not a huge Nicholas Sparks fan. I find his books to be either hit or miss for me. There have been a few that I have really enjoyed, and a few that I have not enjoyed so much, much like the last book that I read of his. However, I found The Longest Ride to be a very enjoyable read, and I will have to admit, it’s definitely one of the more liked books for me.

There are two completely different, yet somewhat alike, stories in the novel. One story is about Ira and Ruth, the other is about Luke and Sophia. While the lives of these couples are so completely different, while you read the book, you start to realize how similar they really are. And in the end, they intertwine in the most wonderful of ways.

While I enjoyed Luke and Sophie’s story, which takes place in the present day and was super romantic, I also enjoyed Ira and Ruth’s story, with is told through the past, on their journey from when they first meet and fall in love, to up to the time when they are old and gray. I appreciated their story so much more, because I felt I really got to know so much more about them. That being said, Luke and Sophia’s story was just as great, and had more of a romantic quality to it.

To be honest, I was really, really worried about how this book was going to end. The last book I read by Sparks’ had a bit of a disappointing ending for me, one that caught me off guard and I didn’t enjoy it at all. So I worried about the end of The Longest Ride. Thankfully, it’s a good ending, and while I would have loved just one more chapter from Ira, I love how everything came together in the end.

Overall; for me, this is one of Spark’s better books. I enjoyed it. I’m not sure I would have even picked up the book if it weren’t for all the hype about the movie, which I’m definitely curious to see, mostly because Scott Eastwood is playing Luke. *Yum*. But I am glad that I did read the book, it’s made me even more excited for the movie.

Fans of Sarah Dessen and Huntley Fitzpatrick will enjoy this smart debut young adult novel, equal parts My Life Next Door and The Princess Diaries—plus a dash of Aaron Sorkin.

Kate Quinn’s mom died last year, leaving Kate parentless and reeling. So when the unexpected shows up in her living room, Kate must confront another reality she never thought possible—or thought of at all. Kate does have a father. He’s a powerful politician. And he’s running for U.S. President. Suddenly, Kate’s moving in with a family she never knew she had, joining a campaign in support of a man she hardly knows, and falling for a rebellious boy who may not have the purest motives. This is Kate’s new life. But who is Kate? When what she truly believes flies in the face of the campaign’s talking points, she must decide. Does she turn to the family she barely knows, the boy she knows but doesn’t necessarily trust, or face a third, even scarier option?

Set against a backdrop of politics, family, and first love, this is a story of personal responsibility, complicated romance, and trying to discover who you are even as everyone tells you who you should be. (Goodreads)

Guest Post:

YA Recs for 6 Fabulous First Daughters

Life on the campaign trail can be grueling. Sometimes it’s nice to escape the glare of the public eye and lose yourself in someone else’s story. In THE WRONG SIDE OF RIGHT, Kate reads THE FOUNTAINHEAD between appearances—a loaner from the campaign’s speechwriter, a fervent Libertarian and fan of author Ayn Rand. Although she enjoys it, I think history-buff Kate might prefer a classic with a more progressive slant, like NORTH AND SOUTH by Elizabeth Gaskell. Here are more book recommendations for some real-life political daughters, both present-day and historical.

Malia Obama – ‘Just One Day,’ Gayle Forman By all accounts, this sixteen-year-old First Daughter is bright and well-mannered with a structured but down-to-earth life at the White House. The Obama girls have had the opportunity to travel the world, including a visit last year to China. But I wonder if Malia might enjoy this story of a type-A girl whose lack of a security detail gives her the chance to fall recklessly in love on the last day of her three-week European tour.

Meghan McCain – ‘Shine’, Lauren Myracle Okay, so Meghan McCain isn’t technically a First Daughter, but she’s still political royalty, a household name known best for her honesty—the way she both speaks up for the Republican values she holds dear and speaks out against the policies she disagrees with. An outspoken advocate for gay marriage, McCain would root loudly for SHINE’s protagonist Cat, who stands up to her conservative community after her best friend falls victim to a hate crime.

Chelsea Clinton – ‘The List’, Siobhan Vivian One of the youngest victims of the dawn of the tabloid age, Chelsea Clinton grew up having her physical appearance documented, picked apart, publicly derided and eventually applauded. A brainy teen (now a PhD), Chelsea might especially appreciate this examination of how society’s objectifying lens impacts girls today at every point on the “beauty” spectrum.

Margaret Truman – ‘Code Name Verity’, Elizabeth Wein Both a First Daughter and a 1940s career woman, Margaret Truman gained notoriety as a singer, a radio newsreader and a prolific biographer and mystery novelist. With its World War II setting and its mix of female empowerment and page-turning mystery, CODE NAME VERITY seems like the perfect book to pass Margaret’s way.

Alice Roosevelt – ‘The Luxe’, Anna Godberson “I’m a hedonist,” Alice Roosevelt famously described herself, and judging by her juicy biography, nobody would disagree. A turn of the century socialite who brought glamour and scandal to the White House, Alice would relate only too well to the ladies of THE LUXE, set amid the glittering and salacious party scene of Manhattan, 1899.

Helen Taft – ‘Glory O’Brien’s History of the Future’, A.S. King A devoted daughter and White House debutante, Helen Taft was one smart cookie. A noted professor of history, she first became Dean of Bryn Mawr College at the remarkable age of 26, and was also an active suffragette. A forward-thinker like Helen would no doubt love A.S. King’s latest, about a girl with the literal ability to look into the future and effect change for women’s rights.

Following her pitch-perfect debut Open Road Summer, Emery Lord pens another gorgeous story of best friends, new love, & second chances.

Brimming with heartfelt relationships and authentic high-school dynamics The Start of Me and You proves that it’s never too late for second chances.

It’s been a year since it happened—when Paige Hancock’s first boyfriend died in an accident. After shutting out the world for two years, Paige is finally ready for a second chance at high school . . . and she has a plan. First: Get her old crush, Ryan Chase, to date her—the perfect way to convince everyone she’s back to normal. Next: Join a club—simple, it’s high school after all. But when Ryan’s sweet, nerdy cousin, Max, moves to town and recruits Paige for the Quiz Bowl team (of all things!) her perfect plan is thrown for a serious loop. Will Paige be able to face her fears and finally open herself up to the life she was meant to live? (Goodreads)
The Start of Me and You is one of the top books on my list of Most Anticipated Books of 2015. I really enjoyed reading Open Road Summer last year, and I was super excited to see what Ms. Lord was going to come up with next. Having read the book I can honestly say, she blew me away with this novel. It was so far beyond good. If you see me give a 5 star review, please know that means I really, really loved a book. (I’m kind of stingy with my stars.) This book was definitely worth all 5 stars that I gave it, and if possible, I would give it even more.

When we first meet Paige in the novel, she seems a bit lost. After the death of her boyfriend, she closed in on herself. But it’s been a year and she’s finally ready to get back to her life, so she comes up with a plan to recreate herself, which includes getting her old crush, Ryan Chase to finally notice her, and to join a club to get herself out there more. But then Max walks into her life, and changes all her plans forever.

I found Paige to be a very relatable main character, especially her need to have *introvert time*, where you just have to step away from the crowd for a moment and take a breath. I could totally understand the overwhelming feelings considering everything that she went through, and this made me appreciate her journey to recreate herself even more. Luckily Paige had a great support system in her three awesome friends, especially in Tess, her best friend. These girls shared an amazing friendship, one of those rare, special bonds that I am always envious of. I loved Paige, she was such a great character, and I loved how well I connected with her.

There are just SO many secondary characters in the story that you are going to love. As I already mentioned above, Paige has some really great friends, especially Tess. Tess is one of those friends that every girl dreams of having. She was so awesome. There’s also Paige’s crush, Ryan, who was pretty great throughout the whole story. And then there is Ryan’s cousin, Max, who you are going to fall head over heels in love with because he’s so close to perfection, it’s insane. Paige and all of these characters have an amazing chemistry and friendships and they really make this novel even more amazing.

While there is a bit of romance in the book, it’s definitely not insta-love, and it doesn’t overpower the story at all. The relationship was sweet and adorable; one that grew over time, especially with one of the characters being oblivious for the most part. But I adored it. The storyline for the book was cute, but it also dealt with some difficult issues as well.  I loved the setting of the book as well; a lot of the story took place in a book store/ coffee shop, and I enjoyed reading about it so much, I found myself wanting to visit so that I could stroll through the aisle while I enjoy a drink.

Overall; The Start of Me and You is a wonderful novel filled with really great characters, wonderful relationships, and a lovely story. This book gave me all the feels; I laughed, I giggled, I cried, I wanted to climb into the book and live with these characters. It was such a great read. If you’re a fan of Emery Lord already, you’ll definitely love this new novel. If you’ve not yet read something by her, I highly recommend that you do so. Her books are so great.

For fans of Gone Girl, I Hunt Killers, and TV's How to Get Away with Murder.

Max Cantrell has never been a big fan of the truth, so when the opportunity arises to sell forged permission slips and cover stories to his classmates, it sounds like a good way to make a little money and liven up a boring senior year. With the help of his friends Preston and Parvati, Max starts Liars, Inc. Suddenly everybody needs something and the cash starts pouring in. Who knew lying could be so lucrative?

When Preston wants his own cover story to go visit a girl he met online, Max doesn’t think twice about hooking him up. Until Preston never comes home. Then the evidence starts to pile up—terrifying clues that lead the cops to Preston’s body. Terrifying clues that point to Max as the murderer.

Can Max find the real killer before he goes to prison for a crime he didn’t commit? In a story that Kirkus Reviews called "Captivating to the very end," Paula Stokes starts with one single white lie and weaves a twisted tale that will have readers guessing until the explosive final chapters.
(Goodreads)
Liars, Inc. is the second book that I’ve read by Paula Stokes, the first being The Art of Lainey, which I really enjoyed. I was looking forward to seeing what kind of mystery Paula would come up with in this story, and I definitely wasn’t disappointed.

Max was an interesting main character. He’s far from perfect, and has done some things in the past and present that he’s not exactly proud of. Not only that, he’s super easily influenced by his best friends Preston and Parvati. When he and his friends start up Liars, Inc. as a way to bring in extra cash, the lying part comes easily to him. When his best friend comes up missing, with clues pointing to Max as the main suspect, he still can’t stop the lies. But there was something about Max, something that makes you like him despite all the lying and imperfections. He was definitely one of the more interesting characters I’ve read about before. I really enjoyed that the book was told from a male characters point of view. I feel like I do get to read this very often, and it’s always so interesting to see such a different perspective.

I loved the murder mystery storyline for the book. It was definitely intriguing! I figured out one of the biggest mysteries pretty early on the story, which makes me proud of my super awesome instincts. (Ha!) However, the twists and turns kept coming as I flew through the pages, and I was surprised when at the end I was only partially right about the mystery.

Overall; Paula Stokes definitely has another hit on her hands with Liars, Inc.! The book definitely kept me entertained, and the mystery was full of twists and turns that will keep you guessing about what has happened, and what will happen. Add this book to your to-read list today!

Worlds divide, magic slays, and love lies in the second book of Josephine Angelini’s The Worldwalker Trilogy.

"You think I’m a monster, but my choices, as ruthless as they seem, are justified."

Lily is back in her own universe, and she's ready to start a new life with Rowan by her side. True, she almost died in the Pyre that fueled their escape from New Salem, and must hide her magic for the safety of everyone she cares about, but compared to fighting the Woven, the monstrous creatures inhabiting the alternate Salem, life is looking pretty good.

Unfortunately, Lillian, ruthless ruler of the 13 Cities, is not willing to let Lily go that easily. If she can’t persuade Lily to return to her world, she will force her to come back by doing away with the ones she loves.

Picking up right where Trial By Fire left off, Firewalker is another sexy, fast-paced, heartbreaking thrill ride from internationally bestselling author Josephine Angelini! (Goodreads)

Lou Clark knows lots of things. She knows how many footsteps there are between the bus stop and home. She knows she likes working in The Buttered Bun tea shop and she knows she might not love her boyfriend Patrick.

What Lou doesn't know is she's about to lose her job or that knowing what's coming is what keeps her sane.

Will Traynor knows his motorcycle accident took away his desire to live. He knows everything feels very small and rather joyless now and he knows exactly how he's going to put a stop to that.

What Will doesn't know is that Lou is about to burst into his world in a riot of colour. And neither of them knows they're going to change the other for all time. (Goodreads)
Me Before You was the book club pick for the Sisterhood of the Traveling Book Club for February. I was having a bit of trouble deciding on what to read, and my dear friend Kathy suggested that we give this book a try. I immediately agreed, and did so just by going off the ratings that I had seen for the book at that point. I was definitely not disappointed.

I knew this was going to be an emotional read even before I started it, and to be quite honest, the book broke me. I was able to keep my emotions in check for the most part, but in the last half of the book, I was an emotional mess.

You will fall in love with the characters in this story, especially the two main characters, Louisa and Will. Lou was lots of fun and a bit snarky at times, which I love in a character. When we first meet her she has no idea what she wants from her life or her future. But she grows and matures so much throughout the novel, she really felt like a completely different person by the end of the book, in a good way!  As for Will, you just couldn’t help but sympathize with him for what he had been through, and for the decisions that he makes in the novel. But you’ll totally fall in love with him as well.  Lou and Will have a wonderful chemistry together that makes this book so insanely special.

But they aren’t the only characters that you will love in the novel. There is also Lou’s family; her parents, grandfather, sister and nephew. Her family is one that grew on me more and more throughout the novel, and by the end, I was pretty much in love with them as well, especially with her parents. Nathan, Will’s health care worker was also a really great character.

The storyline for this book is one that will really, really make you stop and think... Think about the choices you make in your life, and how those choices can be taken away from you in a heartbeat. It’s about learning to love and to accept things that you can’t change. As I mentioned above, this book was a really emotional read. Sometimes you just need to read something that will give you a really good cry, and this book will definitely do that.

Overall; I’m SO very glad to have read this book with my book club. We all agree that it was so good, and in our discussion we pretty much flailed over all the awesomeness that is this book. It really is a great read, so if you haven’t picked it up, please do so! Now that there the sequel has been announced, I am really looking forward to it as well.
