I’ve become an expert at avoiding things that could hurt me—which means I will figure out how to stay away from Marco Leone.

Seventeen-year-old Frankie Devereux would do anything to forget the past. Haunted by the memory of her boyfriend’s death, she lives her life by one dangerous rule: Nothing matters. At least, that’s what Frankie tells herself after a reckless mistake forces her to leave her privileged life in the Heights to move in with her dad—an undercover cop. She transfers to a public high school in the Downs, where fistfights don’t faze anyone and illegal street racing is more popular than football.

Marco Leone is the fastest street racer in the Downs. Tough, sexy, and hypnotic, he makes it impossible for Frankie to ignore him—and how he makes her feel. But the risks Marco takes for his family could have devastating consequences for them both. When Frankie discovers his secret, she has to make a choice. Will she let the pain of the past determine her future? Or will she risk what little she has left to follow her heart? (Goodreads)

My Thoughts...

I was super excited to read something new by Kami Garcia, as the last book I read by her was Beautiful Creatures, and that was a few years ago. The Lovely Reckless sounded right up my alley, and I couldn't wait to get started on it!

The main character in the story, Frankie, suffers from PTSD after seeing the horrific death of her boyfriend. After making a reckless mistake one night, she's sent to live with her undercover cop dad, leaving her life of privilege behind. At her new school, she meets Marco, the sexy, tattooed street racer who she can't seem to stop thinking about, and who will change her world in ways she never expected.

I really liked both Frankie and Marco. They both had issues, but they both seemed to really help each other. Both made the other feel safe in a way that either one has ever experienced. The romance between the two was a little ... intense. Don't get me wrong, I loved the tension building up to it, but then it started feeling a bit insta-lovely, and I had to roll my eyes a little. haha! I still enjoyed it, however, and Frankie and Marco were super cute together.

The storyline for the book was very engaging, and I was hooked just a few chapters in. I started reading the book late one night, thinking that I would just read a few pages before bed, and before I knew it, I was 8 chapters in. I finished the remainder of the book the next day, as I couldn't seem to put it down. The ending was a little predictable, but that didn't stop me from flying through the pages and completely losing track of time because I was so engrossed in the story. The book reminds me very much of one of my favorite books by Katie McGarry, a book that I absolutely adore. I love books about fast cars and racing, and, of course, guys with tattoos. *wink*

I was a little bummed to discover that The Lovely Reckless is a standalone novel, as I was hoping it would be a series! There are SO many characters in the story that I'd love to read more about. Like Cruz, for instance. I would love to see her have her own story, so Kami, if you decide to write that story, I will gladly throw all my money your way!

Overall; I really enjoyed The Lovely Reckless! It was an engrossing and quick read. I wish I had more books like this in my collection! I'm super excited for my finished copy to arrive, so that I can stare at it on my shelf every day. :) Check it out sometime!

  1. Great review Christy! I didn't like said book by Katie McGarry that much, so I'm hesitant to read The Lovely Reckless. There are so many comparisons between the two!
