Last spring, Nikki Beckett vanished, sucked into an underworld known as the Everneath, where immortals Feed on the emotions of despairing humans. Now she's returned- to her old life, her family, her friends- before being banished back to the underworld... this time forever. In a state of despair, Nikki Beckett was pulled into the underworld by bad boy Cole. Cole is an immortal, who ‘feeds’ off the despondent emotions of those of the living, in order to remain immortal. Six months has passed since she vanished, but now Nikki’s back in the real world. She only has six months to make amends with her family and friends, before being sent back to the underworld forever.
She has six months before the Everneath comes to claim her, six months for good-byes she can't find the words for, six months to find redemption, if it exists.
Nikki longs to spend these months reconnecting with her boyfriend, Jack, the one person she loves more than anything. But there's a problem: Cole, the smoldering immortal who first enticed her to the Everneath, has followed Nikki to the mortal world. And he'll do whatever it takes to bring her back- this time as his queen.
As Nikki's time grows short and her relationships begin slipping from her grasp, she's forced to make the hardest decision of her life: find a way to cheat fate and remain on the Surface with Jack or return to the Everneath and become Cole's... (Goodreads)
Everneath is a read that definitely left me speechless. At this point, I am still trying to form my thoughts about the book. I definitely enjoyed it, and I can’t wait to read more from this author.
I found Nikki, the main character, to be very likeable. You have to feel bad for her for what she’s been through. She’s definitely a damaged young lady, not only emotionally, but physically as well. But she’s also determined. She knows what’s coming for her, and what her life will become, but she still tries the best she can to make things right with the people she loves.
Cole, the Everling that pulled Nikki into the underworld, was really mysterious to me. I didn’t know what to expect next from him, and he definitely kept me guessing. He also left me with mixed emotions. I thought at first that he really didn’t care about Nikki, but then he pulls a one-eighty, and makes me think that he does care. I really just couldn’t tell if he was a good guy, or a bad guy. I love that the author kept me guessing about him. He’s such a mystery.
The character in the story that I really loved was Jack. Jack is Nikki’s boyfriend in her old life. Wow, I love Jack. The author did a wonderful job of describing his emotions. He loved Nikki, he was lost without her. I could totally feel that from the pages. Needless to say, Jack is definitely on my crush-worthy list.
The story is told in different points in time, both past and present. There was a lot of information to digest about what was going on, and I did have to go back and re-read a few times to make sure I had the story correct. It was still pretty fascinating, the whole storyline kept me hooked up until the end. The book was also very well paced. I was so addicted, I flew through the pages.
Overall, this was a really mysterious, enjoyable read. I can’t say that I have read many books, if any, like it up to this point. I’m really looking forward to the next book in the series; I ‘need’ to know what’s going to happen next!
Happy Reading!
I really don't like books about the underworld but you've got me convinced I should read this. Thanks so much.

I cannot WAIT to read this, so I'm excited to hear that you loved it. Both the story and the cover are equally amazing. I love how you describe Cole, that unpredictability to him and of course, there's something thrilling about a bad boy :) And oh, I can't wait to meet this crush-worthy Jack! Awesome review!!

ReplyDeleteI ADORED this one! There was definitely a lot going on with the timeline switching but I kind of liked it, it made me all the more curious to know just how all the pieces fit together. And I couldn't have loved Jack more if I tried, so glad you loved him too Christy!

ReplyDeleteI'm glad it's a nice book, I was wondering about it. The cover is just gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThis was one I stayed up really late finishing and, despite my yawns and near-caffeine-overdose the next day, totally worth it. Great review -- it was so unusual and such a twist, wasn't it?
ReplyDeleteYour review has made me 100 times more excited to read this awesome books.
ReplyDeleteSounds like Jack and Cole might both be a little swoon worthy. I wonder if there will be any Team Cole fans as he seems to be more of a "bad guy" in the story (most likely I will end up loving him, haha).
The main character sounds like someone you actually root for and like.
Argh! I can't wait to read this now!
This sounds really interesting. It's on my list to read. It reminds me of the Persephone story but with a lot more to it. I'm looking forward to it!
